Combatting Fraud Targeting the Elderly

Elderly individuals have increasingly become prime targets for fraudsters, with sophisticated scams specifically aimed at those over the age of 60. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), scams targeting seniors have risen by over 66% in just the past two years. This reflects a disturbing trend of criminals preying on older adults who often possess accumulated savings, home equity, and retirement funds.

2024 AARP report revealed nearly $5 billion in reported losses among older adults. Even more alarming, the estimated actual losses may exceed $28 billion annually. Since many victims never report these crimes due to shame or fear of judgment, it leaves the true scale of the problem hidden.

Chances are, you know someone affected by one of these heartbreaking scams. In fact, a dear friend of mine recently shared a personal story: her mother, a sharp, physically active woman in her early 70s who spent her life working professionally to enjoy a secure retirement, fell victim to a financial scam.

One afternoon last summer, she received a call from someone claiming to be from her bank. The caller sounded professional, used banking language, seemed somewhat familiar with her account, and sounded trustworthy. He told her there had been fraudulent activity on her account and that, to protect her funds, she needed to close it and transfer the money into a new one. Fearing further loss, she followed the instructions and withdrew her savings only to realize the next day it had all been a scam. Her entire savings were gone.

The emotional impact was devastating. She felt ashamed and embarrassed, choosing not to report the incident out of fear of being judged. Like so many others, she remained silent, confiding only in a few family members. Her family was shocked that she was vulnerable to that situation. The bottom line is, it can happen to the most informed senior citizen, because these despicable scammers are simply that good at what they do.
